What to look for in a roofing company

The weather is warming up and it’s the perfect time for home improvements. Whether you’re making minor repairs, building a garage, or adding a new roof; finding someone who’s not only professional but qualified to work on your roof is key to making sure that your investment doesn’t end up as a victim of shoddy workmanship.

There are a number of things you need to consider and discuss with a potential contractor before letting him or her work on your roof.  At Precision Roofing we have been in business since 1987 and are here to help you with any questions you may have.

Proper Certification and Licensing

Your first discussion with a potential roofing contractor should be to find out what their credentials are. A professional roofing contractor should be able to provide you with copies of their licensing and also the locations, municipalities, and states they are licensed to work in. Roofing contractors have professional associations as well.

Never be afraid to ask for references, but be sure to follow through and check with any former client references you do receive. It’s recommended that a professional roofing company or contractor be insured as well. This protects you as well as the roofing company from any liability or damages while working on your roof.

Obtain Estimates

In your search for a professional roofing contractor, be sure to get estimates from at least three professional roofers. When you’re going over the roofing estimates you receive, check to see what the estimate includes, such as the materials, the scope of work, removal of the old roof and materials, and the roofing contractor’s rates and fees. If there is anything you don’t understand on the roofing estimate, ask for an explanation. A qualified and professional roofing contractor is willing to explain the estimate as well as their findings during the inspection of the roof.

Experience and Expertise

Whether you’re dealing with a roof repair, roof design or a custom build it’s important to have someone who has experience and the knowledge about what kind of roof they will be building or repairing. Roofing materials vary as well as styles and structure. For instance, asphalt shingles are wildly popular but wood and slate roofs are regarded as a specialisation. If your contractor isn’t familiar with working with these materials, it could wind up costing you more money later on.

During the search process for a roofing contractor, find out what type of experience they have. If they don’t have the experience, will they be subcontracting the work? If that’s the case, the subcontractor needs to be under the same scrutiny that your roofing company is. This goes for every subcontractor the professional roofer works with. While the roofing company may work with them, if they don’t pass your inspection, ask the roofer if there is anyone else they work with. You don’t have to say yes simply because the roofing contractor sublets work to someone else.

Get it in Writing

The roofing contractor you choose should be able to give you a quote in writing. When it comes down to finalising the roofing contract, look over the contract carefully. The start and completion date should be included. If there’s anything that needs revising, be sure to do so before the work on your roof begins. It’s important to note that warranties and guarantees on roofing materials and workmanship be given to you in writing as well. Without receiving all information in writing, you could be at a loss should you have to dispute any defects in roofing materials or work. Further, if the job goes over the contracted budget, the roofing contractor may be obligated to discuss additional fees with you before continuing work.

A qualified roofing company or contractor will understand your need to check references, their experience, and the number of years they’ve been in the roofing business before signing a contract. Most will have the information you request on hand and be willing to obtain what you need before beginning work on your roof. Finally, be sure to read all the fine print in the contract to look for hidden clauses or fees.

The information you gather and the research you do on the roofing contractor will ensure you’re working with someone who has the roofing experience you need and the professionalism you demand. Depending on where you live, you may not be able to fight any legal claims of defects, mistakes or poor workmanship if you haven’t properly done your homework before signing an agreement with a roofing contractor or company.
